What you'll do

We start the tour at 71 Wale Street where we discuss the origins of the oldest suburb in South Africa. Our walk then takes us past the Auwal Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in South Africa, which was started by enslaved people in defiance of Dutch law, in 1794 .

We stop along the way and grab a koesiester, before walking down the street with all the colourful houses. This is the most-photographed street in South Africa. We then work our way towards Cape Town’s famed spice shop, Atlas, where you will smell the heady aromas of spices used in everyday Cape Malay cooking. These are the same spices used by slaves as an expression of freedom in their masters’ kitchens.

Where you'll be

We will meet in front of the Bo-Kaap Museum at 71 Wale Street. Our walk through the neighbourhood, the colourful homes, the sound of the Athaan and stories our hosts tell, are the hallmarks of a very different experience.

AMAZING guide and such an important experience. I’d recommend this tour to anyone. Rafiq is a wealth of knowledge, and he brings in so much personal connection to the history. He’s also an advocate for the community and a great person to support.

This is one of the oldest suburbs in South Africa. This beautiful neighborhood was built from the slaves and their families/ community is currently fighting against gentrification. Rafiq was very informative and welcoming. Thanks for a great experience! #BoKaap #BoKaapMatters

Rafiq gave us the best tour we’ve had in Cape Town! He was personal, responsive, honest, and knowledgeable. He made us feel at home in his neighborhood, while explaining the history of the area and the issues they face today. As he showed us around Bo-Kaap, he gave us a true insight into his world and gave us kind wisdom we will take home with us to our own neighborhoods. I highly recommend this experience!
