What you'll do

See and taste the inner-workings of a sake brewery

As we weave through the cobbled streets of Toronto's historic distillery district, we'll discuss how a simple mill evolved into the world's largest distillery. We'll stop in to taste some craft beer and pass by Toronto's only sake brewery where you can visit after the tour. Then we'll settle in at Boku where you'll learn all about the ingredients, styles, and brewing process of sake. Sample loads of premium Japanese sake and learn to identify the styles and flavors like a pro. During the tasting enjoy izakaya-style snacks like takoyaki, gyoza, and more. You'll go home with a strong taste of sake culture and history that you can share next time you are out for Japanese!

Mackenzie provided us a lot of information about sake. My adult son and I arrived a little early and Mackenzie arrived a little late for our 3:00 tour, but he apologized and offered us a delicious chocolate sampling after the sake tasting. We were the only participants for that tour. I arrived hungry knowing food samplings were included in the price. We sat listening to his wealth of knowledge of sake and it was very interesting. Then the food and sake arrived. I was ready to dig in and drink as the food and sake were served warm. However, I did not want to be rude and start drinking and eating until we were instructed. However, Mackenzie loves to talk, and talk he did. Eventually, we were told to sample the sake and enjoy the delicious food samplings, while Mackenzie continued to speak on the history of sake. Then we went on a nice tour of the Distillery. Again, Mackenzie was very knowledgeable of the area and was able to answer our questions. I thought the tour was lovely. However, as far as value, I think the price for the event is a bit on the high side. I didn’t mind paying the price, but I think a nice dinner would’ve been more worthwhile. I guess I just had more food and drinks on my mind at the time. Having said that, Mackenzie is great and very personable, and if you enjoy learning the ins and outs of sake, you’ve come to the right place.

I did this tour twice and it was worth it! Both times unique and never boring. We had a lot of fun and Mackenzie, who is an outstanding host, definitely knows what he's talking about. You get to learn a lot about the distillery district and of course the sake. Book the experience and enjoy!

Mackenzie is exceptionally knowledgeable and great at what he does. We loved hearing about the history of Toronto, the neighborhood, and the building before getting into the Sake tasting portion — it added necessary context that helped us appreciate the sake even more. The sake itself is incredibly good and goes quite well with dinner at one of Toronto’s many Japanese restaurants that serves the Sake we got to try from the source! I strongly recommend this experience if you’re in Toronto and have the chance to go.
