What you'll do

Recreate ancient marble designs in a transformed church

Inside the hidden deconsecrated Cappella Orsini chapel, now a dedicated art space also known as the Cappella Orsini POT, we'll learn to reproduce the historic technique of restoration of faux marble painting, which has been used for centuries in Roman design. We'll commence with a brief introduction of the red porphyry marble technique used in the ancient palaces and churches of Rome. In the meantime, we will paint on a wooden tablet using watercolors, brushes, and sea sponges to create the textures and the varying light. The result is a personal and one-of-a-kind piece of décor and everlasting memory of our day. It’s amazing the results you can achieve with this simple technique that will stay with you forever.

I have a background as a sociologist and a degree in Fashion Management. I have traveled a lot and lived between two continents—Europe and North America. I have always breathed design. I love to share Italian culture and arts and get to know people from other parts of the world. I believe arts, beauty, and design are the perfect means for cultural fusion.

Where you'll be

The Cappella Orsini Chapel was built in the 12th century on the ruins of the theater of Pompeus the Great, where Julius Caesar was murdered. Cappella Orsini is now a culture club center focused on exhibitions, concerts, and special dinners and parties, evoking the building's history.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn an ancient art of faux marble painting, something that has interested me for a while. It is held in an ancient chapel that sits atop the site where Julius Caesar was assassinated, which is something you will not find in any guidebook. I was the only student which gave Riccardo and i to talk about art and lots of other things. And at the end of the day i left with a waxed faux marble egg. On the way to the lesson i passed by the Coliseum which was packed with thousands of exhausted visitors and i was struck by the contrast an hour later sitting in this quiet and ancient space. This is a little piece of the real Rome well worth experiencing . I highly recommend it. .

What a nice experience to finish our Roman holiday, in an old chapel turned into an art gallery which hosts contemporary exhibitions. The place has a special atmosphere, if you are into arts you will definitely appreciate this space. Riccardo is a wonderful host and teacher. I was there with my Mum, who doesn’t speak any English, so I was constantly translating. Riccardo was accommodating, patient and made sure my Mum was fully involved. We’ve learnt a new technique, got new interesting informations and fun facts about art and Roman history and ultimately had the greatest last night. Gracie mille!

We had great fun learning about the porphydous marble that originally came from Egypt and was then also found in Italy. Riccardo taught us how to paint to resemble the original and we left with a couple of beautiful "marble" candle holders. Riccardo coupled with an amazing venue made for an entertaining evening in Rome.
