What you'll do

OUR SCHEDULE 10am Refreshments: coffee/tea, soft drinks, homemade granola bar Introduction to this historic landscape: Learn about the unique 'Friary' site of the Hinton Charterhouse Monastery, where the lay brothers farmed from 1232, including the study of archaeological maps showing the outline of buildings which formed a village, now almost entirely below the ground. We will discuss the variety of skills that the monks used for their day-to-day survival and the flora and fauna locally that they depended upon with special reference to medicinal herbs. 10.30am Traditional rural skills on site: Try your hand at coppicing, dry stone walling and foraging. Learn about the fish stocks the monks depended upon, especially carp, and how they tended the river banks, including the willow, that was so useful domestically. See examples of willow fence work, hazel hurdles and wool rugs woven upon a hand loom. 11.15am Walk to medieval Farleigh Hungerford Castle along an ancient drovers' route following the River Frome Return via Iford Manor, a beautiful Georgian manor house with Italianate gardens Entrance to both these places is seasonal, so not included in the price, but please let me know if you specifically wish to include a visit. 1.30pm Return to Friary for luncheon: Ploughman's luncheon or vegan wraps Gluten-free cake or traditional cream tea (scones, clotted cream and jam)

Penny

I organise the teaching of Traditional Rural Skills on a Scheduled Ancient Monument Site called 'Friary' just outside the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath. My background is in farming, but I also have a science and a law degree. I have run this LANTRA-registered project for 2 years. during which time we have immersed ourselves in the history of the Carthusian monks who lived here in the medieval period. We have learnt about the skills that they learnt to survive and their use of local flora and fauna and discovered the hidden archaeology of their village. Also incorporated in your Airbnb Experience is a riverside walk to an important medieval castle, then back past an historic manor house with famous gardens. Our Airbnb Super-host and AA-5 star rated accommodation also offers accommodation on site for up to 16 guests.
