What you'll do
Join us at our ranch in the Angeles National Forest to practice the ancient art of shepherding goats. Even though our private location is less than 90 minutes from downtown LA, you'll feel like you've been transported to a far away magical wilderness. Our herd of about 100 goats, aged from 1 month to 12+ years, forages all day in the chaparral and the pinyon pine forest, covering over 70 acres. We'll meet at the barn to talk quickly about safety around the herd and give you some shepherding tips, and then head out to join the goats. While we are shepherding, we will sometimes walk through brush or scramble up a hillside, but mostly it's a gentle walk with lots of breaks to let the goats eat. During these breaks we'll describe how the goats positively impact the landscape to increase forage production, plant biodiversity, water retention and ultimately carbon sequestration. When it's time to bring the goats back to the barn for water and rest, you'll have an opportunity to interact with them more including petting, which they love. If there are new babies, we'll give a tour of the kidding pens so you can meet the newest members of the herd. At the end of the hike, we will invite you to enjoy a snack of apple slices drizzled with caramel sauce made on the ranch from the milk of the goats.

My partner Christian and I are the founders of the only regenerative goat ranch in Los Angeles County, where we have been shepherding goats and educating the public about sustainable agriculture for over 10 years. We have hosted thousands of people on our ranch to learn about low-impact food production, enjoy the company of goats, and experience the magical wilderness of the Angeles National Forest. We are thrilled to be able to provide unique and educational agriculture-related experiences for visitors to Los Angeles.

Where you'll be
We will shepherd the goat herd on our 80 acre ranch in the Angeles National Forest. The property is one of a limited number of privately held parcels within the Forest boundary. It is located at 5200 ft elevation, where the desert chaparral turns to pinyon-juniper woodland. The location is at the maximum elevation for Joshua Trees and is considered a "climate refugee" zone for the species due to cooler temperatures.

At our elevation, especially sensitive people sometimes develop mild altitude symptoms like headaches. Drink lots of water the day before your visit. We recommend wearing close-toed shoes, pants instead of shorts, and a wide brimmed hat.
