What you'll do

This is the annual 3 hour event from 18:00 to 21:00 in Dazaifu, little Kyoto in Kyuusyuu. we will meet at Dazaifu station, and walk to the national museum to learn my home town history. This museum is usually closed at night, but especially on this day, it is open for free for everybody. Then we will enjoy Sentoumyou, the candle light festival in Dazaifu Tenmangu, a shinto shrine, in which we enjoy Kagura, a dance for god. The ancient shrine with a lot of candle lights is the scenery like something out of a dream, and Kagura is even more dreamy and fantastic. This is a dance, however very different from western rhythmical dance. The movement is very slow and looks like there is no rhythm, even though dancers beautifully move in synchronization.
If you like sweets, I recommend Umegae-Mochi, a sweet rice cake with soy bean paste. Please try one. There is many shops selling it in this area. Umegae-Mochi is the special sweets named after the history of Dazaifu Tenmangu. I will tell you about more during the walking.
Other things to note
While we watch Kagura, there is no chairs. This is about 30 minute performance. We will watch it standing somewhere in the yard. This is like a street performing watching.

I have been introducing Japanese culture in various countries. Dazaifu is my home town. I have lived in Australia, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Guyana, and Mozambique to teach Computer Science and Japanese Language as well. Meanwhile I return to Dazaifu several times. Every time I return home, historical shrines and temples welcome me, and I feel I want to show this beautiful scenery to a variety of people in the world and talk about cultural differences and anything we are interested in. Next year I will go to Samoa. While I am in Dazaifu before I leave for Samoa, It is great if I can enjoy something with you.

Where you'll be

We will walk to the national museum through Dazaifu Tenmangu. This is about 10 minute walk from the station, but we will take time doing window shopping since there is a lot of shops on the way. The Kagura dance will be held in the front yard of Dazaifu Tenmangu.
