What you'll do

Meet us on the Lungotevere and begin your tour of Rome’s most characteristic and well-preserved neighborhood: Trastevere. The area is well known for the tiny picturesque alleys, colorful buildings and its countless bars, restaurants and pubs, but not many know that it is also home to some of the crucial locations of the city’s Christian life. Walking its streets, it’s easy to imagine what it must have been like to live in Rome centuries ago. You’ll learn about the daily life of the early Christians, their struggles and achievements and, above all, the stunning monuments they managed to build here in the course of centuries. The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, Santa Cecilia and the remains of the early Christian baptistery, The basilica by Cavallini and the Church of Santa Maria dell’Orto. Santa Maria in Trastevere, one of Rome’s first Christian churches, is still today the religious heart of the district. Next, we’ll take you to Santa Cecilia, built over the tomb of the saint. You’ll move downwards, below the church, and you’ll get to see the remarkable excavations, with the remains of the early Christian baptistery. We’ll end our tour in Santa Maria dell’Orto, a relatively unknown church in the middle of the neighborhood that centuries used to be home to several universities of arts and crafts!
