What you'll do

Please enquire before booking for COVID compliance. Each tour lasts around 2.5 hrs, allowing us to leave and return around a high tide, as West Mersea is a tidal location. With fair weather, we head out across the blackwater where we will pass the seagulls in residence on the old sea barges, up towards Brightlingsea and the mouth of the river Colne. Porpoises have been seen in this area and many may be familiar with the seals that live in and around the estuary. We pass the old power station at Bradwell with its iconic twin generator buildings and the seawater vent used for cooling. Nearby is the legendary Radio Caroline pirate radio vessel that has been anchored here for some years now and still broadcasts live. As we return, we pass the Jurassic coastline of East Mersea where fossils of many types are commonly found. As we head back to West Mersea, we pass the site where a mammoth tusk was found in pristine condition, preserved by the mud that lies at the bottom of the blackwater. Finally we pass into Besom fleet, past the shingle point and onto the mooring. On poor weather days, we visit the local creeks where possible. We have COVID safe practices observed on-board.
On a day-sail, bring suitable clothing. We suggest a wick or base layer, a fleece or equivalent and a weather resistant top layer. Soft sole deck shoes are a mus

I run coastal tours in around West Mersea, Essex. I have sailed these waters for the past 5 years through the summer and winter with my friends and family. I'm a qualified Yachtmaster and a keen lover of sailing. Being on the water lends a unique perspective on life, things slow down, all things on land look different from the sea. Its a wonderful way to spend time, relax and reflect. Being so close to nature with the local seals, porpoises and sea birds reminds us that the environment is worth saving and protecting. We observe carefully to not disturb the local habitats.

Tony is a very welcoming and knowledgable sailing master. He is very thoughtful, texted me very detailed information in advance, shared his sailing stories and introduced some histories in his generation. We also did a bit of sailing during the trip which was a lot of fun as I never did it before. It's also a very reasonable charge, I was the only guest on that day, but he still charged as per person not the whole boat, I would recommend anyone who wants a chilled sailing experience with sea breeze blowing through and wonderful sunshine.
