What you'll do

Each person will photograph the desert landscape, using a Polaroid SX-70 or 600 camera (which I will provide). Then we'll go back to Dodge and Burn Darkroom to use the co-working space. I'll teach you how to take your polaroid apart to remove the emulsion. Using a paintbrush, you'll transfer your image onto watercolor paper and shape it however you choose. While the prints are drying, before the clear coat, you'll be able to enjoy a beverage and browse our extensive collection of fine art photography books. Each person will leave with two completed emulsion lifts.

I've been a photographer for 19yrs and I'm the owner/operator of Dodge and Burn Darkroom. I love teaching classes in film photography and alternative processes. In this digital world, it's exciting when people choose the tangible; taking time to pause, connect with nature, remaining present while intentionally and thoughtfully creating a photograph and then holding the final image in their hands.

This is such a magical experience. She took us out to this great part of the desert catering to what we wanted to shoot. She was knowledgeable and patient throughout the whole process. Her studio and style showcases what an amazing artist she is. I also appreciate that she got to know us.

We had a great time hanging out with Carly who was so knowledgeable about all things photography, her town and the many succulents that we came across in our mini hike. The craft of polaroid emulsion is not as easy as it looks but we were grateful Carly was there to help guide us along the way and we eventually achieved the results that we were so proud of by the end. Thanks Carly! We can't wait to come back and visit you at your darkroom next time we're in town!

This was by far the coolest thing I did while I was in Joshua Tree. Carly and I met up on Thanksgiving day and took photos in the SNOW! It was magical to say the least. We then spent a couple of hours at her studio/dark room learning the polaroid emulsion lift process. She was a great teacher and let me take my time figuring it all out. I left with the most beautiful print of Joshua Trees in the snow. We had great conversations. I will definitely be back next time I come to town.

I couldn’t recommend this experience more! Carly is such a kind and inspiring person. I have never done a Polaroid emulsion before and she was very patient and gave me encouraging instructions and help throughout the class. You can decide what you’d like to photograph and Carly will give suggestions on where to shoot. As I am visiting, I chose pictures of the Joshua Trees themselves and am really excited to have these keepsakes that I made myself! Carly is such an awesome woman and I really appreciated not only her class but also enjoyed her vast knowledge of the town and the surrounding nature. Ask her about her project and leave inspired and ready to take on the park :)
