What you'll do

We leave Amsteredam and 10 minutes later reach the small village of Durgerdam where we get out the vehicle and, on the edge of the lake, on the dike, explain the formation of Holland and its water management.

We drive along lovely back country lanes past cow studded fields to the unspoilt town of Monnickendam where we take you on a 45 minute guided walk, finishing with apple pie and coffee in a lovely old building. On weekdays we visit a cafe at a day care centre for adults with disabilities and one of the things they do there is make exceptional Dutch apple pie.

Next stop is a family farm in the Beemster Polder. They grow tulips, potatoes and have self milking cows and are one of the 460 farms that make up the Beemster Cheese collective. We almost always have a chat with the farmer and see the cows in the milking robot!

Every second tour we pass the Beemster Cheese factory shop to buy cheese for the picnic we have at the windmill.

Our chosen windmill is the picturesque Schermermolen, a stunning 400 year old water pumping mill in a lovely setting. When the wind is blowing, the mill will be turning and pumping water. We guide you right through the mill to the very top and explain how it works as well as the history of windmills in Holland.

The picnic is cheese, wine, apple juice, grapes, crackers, spreads, chocolate for dessert. After that there is a 35 minute drive back!

I started That Dam Guide in 2013 to provide small group, high quality tours of Amstedam and beyond. I used to work for a big comapny with big groups but broke away and really love the cozy small group format I now offer.

Rory, Rob & I c0-host this tour. We love driving in the Dutch countryside and having a day out of Amsterdam. In early 2016 we went on a big bus tour and were herded through Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken, all overrun by mass tourism. So we created the exact opposite of that type of tour. We are exceptionally proud of it, love giving it, and believe it is the best of it’s type, by a long shot!

Mark is now Dutch but via South Africa & the UK. Rob is from the US but called Holland home since 2003 and Rory is from Ireland but been an Amsterdammer since 2015

We were looking for a one-day-out-of-Amsterdam tour. We were so clever to have chosen this one. Mark has curated this tour perfectly. I can’t say enough. He’s incredibly knowledgeable about every topic on this tour. I can’t imagine that there’s anyone that could have done it better. And so many experiences - exactly the ones I was interested in, including - how the heck does a windmill work anyway? Seeing the reclaimed land and how it is kept above water. Even watching self-milking cows! Yep, self milking. And Mark’s personality is perfect in leading this tour and making all feel welcomed. I can’t recommend this one enough.
