What you'll do

Are you looking for a fun and uniquely Japanese experience? Then let's take a trip out to the ballpark! This is a must for sports and baseball fans, but even if you're not a baseball diehard, a Japanese baseball game is definitely worth a visit.

I'll take care of the usual language and physical barriers to attending a Japanese baseball game by providing you with the tickets as the Tokyo Yakult Swallows take on their crosstown rivals, the Tokyo Giants.

We'll be sitting in the Swallows outfield, which means plenty of fun cheering for the home team. But in Japan, you don't just sit and cheer on your own, being in Japan you'll be cheering en masse with the rest of the outfield and the supporters' band as you sing songs for each player while they're at bat. I'll help acquaint you with the cheering songs and moves, as well as provide background on the teams and players. And if you're a baseball newbie, I'll be more than happy to explain the rules of the game as well!

Once the game is done, I'll walk with you back to the station to make sure you're okay to go!

I'm a professional translator who has lived in Japan for over 9 years now. In my previous job, I spent time helping find and introduce interesting tourist spots to foreign travelers. I've also been asked to help interpret and translate for foreign delegations visiting Japan.

Aside from my professional work, I am also a big baseball fan and try to take as many chances to enjoy baseball games here in Tokyo when I can. While I still follow Major League Baseball back in America, I've come to learn more about Japanese baseball (known as Nippon Professional Baseball) and stay on top of the game's latest news, players, and teams.

Where you'll be

We will watch the game at the beautiful outdoor Meiji Jingu Stadium. Opened in 1926, it's owned by its namesake Meiji Shrine and easy to get to from downtown Tokyo. Any seat in this stadium provides a great view of the field and we'll be seeing in the exciting outfield with the Yakult supporters. There's also plenty of tasty stadium food here and beer girls constantly walking through the stands.

I had actually taken Roland's tour of Akihabara earlier that day and Iwas the only one on this event, so it was like going to a game with a friend. One of my bucket list items was to go to a baseball game. It was great! Much less rowdy than American baseball (but then again, I am a rowdy Red Sox fan), and more respectful. There were no fights, no trash-talking or antagonizing the other team. It was just fun. The crowd from both teams sang lots of songs, and the home team, The Swallows, did this cool thing with umbrellas. There was much fan participation. Speaking of umbrellas, it rained, a lot, and I was ready to throw in the towel, but Roland was awesome. We just went inside and watched the game from there! He was a true fan, and made me feel like one as well. Ultimately the game was delayed in the 7th inning, and I decided to leave, but we had a pretty big lead, so I'm sure we must have won. I would totally recommend this!!
