5 hours
Includes equipment
Up to 10 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

The basic principle of eco printing is that various leaves and plant material possess tannins. These tannins have the ability to print permanent color onto fiber when combined with the proper procedure to extract them.

We will begin by laying out foliage (flowers, petals, leaves) onto an item that has been prepared to accept or "bite" the tannins. You will then learn the technique for bundling, tightly binding and processing the bundle, via heat, to create a permanent transfer of pigment and tannins from the leaves to the cloth. Two processing techniques will be covered in this class. After some time in the heat, we will all ooh and ahh as we unbundle our creations and witness surprises from nature.

What to Bring: Rubber gloves (extra long are preferred), clothes that you aren't afraid to get messy or wet and a plastic bag to take wet items home in.

**We will use leaves that we have already collected, but if you want to make an item particularly memorable to you, gather some leaves from your yard or someplace special. Collect maple, oak, sweetgum, birch, dogwood, rose, or blackberry. Choose leaves that have already turned to fall colors. Either press between layers of newspaper, placing a heavy book on them; or place fresh leaves in a freezer bag, fill with water and freeze. After about a week or two, place dried leaves in a plastic container. If frozen, thaw before coming.

My husband, Paul, and I are co-founders of our business, "Echoes of Nature". We learned the process of Eco-printing and Natural Dyeing and are anxious to share this experience with you. After perfecting our process over the past 3 years, we have created our own clothing line including new and up-cycled items, and we sell them on-line and at Pop-up shows in the triangle area. Some of our scarves can even be found at the gift shops at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, here, in Raleigh, NC. We are passionate about the beauty of nature and look forward to showing you how to capture nature's beauty on an article of clothing or accessory.

More tips

Dress appropriately to be outside. We have a studio, but much of the class is outside in the open air. Bring bug spray if you need it, perhaps a hat if it's sunny. Appropriate for age 12 and up. Some standing and using your upper arm strength for bundling. A camping chair would be helpful.
