What you'll do

We will meet at the bee farm in the beautiful Portuguese countryside. If you haven’t got your own transport I can pick you up from Vilar do Pinheiro metro station, it is only a very short 1km drive, send me a message!

I will show you a beehive, frames, explain how the bees live, the equipment we use. We put on a beesuit although our bees are so gentle we dont need to, I rarely need to use a suit or gloves. You get both, a clean beesuit and latex gloves, we open a beehive or two, show you the bees, the queen bee, drones and the workers and explain which flowers they are visiting. The importance of bees and the ecosystem, explain the problems they are having in the modern world. Don’t worry we only keep the most gentle bees.

Afterwards we will have a try of the honey and pollen the bees have collected and take away a sample of the honey. There will be no bee stings!

I was beekeeper for 10 years in the UK, before becoming a commercial beekeeper in Portugal for the last 6, fully trained to train the trainer and development coach. Here we specialise in the breeding selection of Buckfast and Carnica queen bees, arguably the most gentle and prolific bees in the world.

Mark is an expert when it comes to beekeeping and have a talent to share his knowledge with beginners like myself. We learned a lot about the life of bees, different roles how hive looks inside. We had a chance to try eucalyptus honey, one of the best I tried in my life. Everything was in a safe environment, we were wearing protective suits and Mark made sure I won't be exposed for a single sting. Highly recommend this activity!

We spent a very informative and pleasant couple of hours with Mark, his family and some hundred thousand or more bees! Mark is extremely knowledgeable in his field and able to share that knowledge and passion with both adults and children. We felt genuinely welcome at the farm. It was fascinating to see and learn about the bees and how the hives work and to taste the pollen and honey at the end. A throughly enjoyable afternoon!
