What you'll do

This Airbnb Experience is for you if:

* You have attended our other Airbnb Experience 'Creative Writing with Bestseller Authors'
And/or
* You are someone with a little (or even a lot) of writing experience who wants to kick-start a project
And/or
* You are stuck with an existing work and wish to fire your imagination and work towards completion.

In other words some creative writing experience is helpful, but please don't feel you have to know it all!

In this half day you will enjoy practical exercises with us (Sarah and Bridget), lots of discussion and sharing of ideas and tips, plus the same individual attention that we offer on our regular workshop, but the focus will be on taking your writing to the next level. Exercises include:

* Creating emotional tension – writing a scene with a subtext using convincing dialogue
* How to use descriptive passages to add atmosphere and depth to your stories
• A closer look at how to structure a novell/novella including honing your 'pitch '
* An exploration of plot, examining a short story using different plot templates

Plus you'll learn more about the UK publishing industry and the opportunities of self publishing from Sarah and Bridget.

In addition we’ll give face-to-face feedback on up to 2000 words. See 'What Guests Should Bring' for details.

I'm Sarah Rayner, author of five novels including the international bestseller, One Moment, One Morning, which is set in Brighton, where I live and work. In 2014 I published Making Friends with Anxiety which grew into a non-fiction series with a very substantial on-line following. I have sold over 500,000 books worldwide, but my first foray into fiction was writing short stories for women's magazines. I'm currently working on my sixth novel.

My co-host is Bridget Whelan, whose career was kick-started when she won $4000 in an international story competition. She has an MA in Creative and Life Writing from Goldsmiths College and lectures in the subject. Should either one of us be unable to attend, another bestselling author will step in.

My husband, Tom, a chef, will provide home-cooked food.

Where you'll be

The writing workshop will be held our charming period home in central Brighton, which is 8 minutes walk from the station. If it's warm enough we will sit in our secluded south-facing patio; if not we will be indoors around the dining table in our cosy living room with its open fire. Tom and I have been Airbnb hosts for three years and in that time have hosted over 200 guests. We are delighted to be opening our doors to those who enjoy writing to
