What you'll do

During this 3-4 hour foodie tour, we’ll wander through the backstreets of Xi'an on foot, sample dishes at the best local food shops and learn about traditional Chinese culture with an English-speaking local food expert. A special TukTuk ride will be part of this experience as well.

We’ll watch your food being made and learn about what makes it so special to Xi’an locals. Whether it’s sitting by an old man grilling meat over burning coals or watching dumplings being made right in front of you. Whether you are shredding your own pita bread for “Pita Bread Soaked in Lamb Soup” (Yang Rou Pao) or listening to the sound of fresh Biang Biang noodles being made, there's something to love for everyone.

These five to six eateries are scattered around the district, some on main streets and others tucked away in back streets, but they all cook for the locals. When you visit these food stops, you will learn a lot about the local’s lives and the family restaurants that have been making their specialities for generations.

i can promise you that this experience will surprise you a lot and you’ll have a lot of fun and some unforgettable memories for you to take home! Join us for this rare experience!

Very cool experience, got to check out restaurants and try food hidden in the back alleys I would not have been able to find myself.

The tour with Michael (Dongcheng's colleague) was brilliant. Michael was very welcoming and had lots of interesting stories about the history of the food, the town and other topics that arose in conversation. The food was delicious! Would highly recommend

My sister and I had joined 4 other Airbnb food tours around the world and this one in Xi'an was among the top. Winter was our guide and he was just wonderful. We really like his food choices of small stand hidden in the back alley or family own little stores that only local people know how to find. The relaxing time in the milk tea house was just wonderful and exactly what we needed in a cold afternoon. We really liked the tea at a tea house that Winter helped us bought some back from the local market as souvenir. (So cheap!!)Also got some roasted sunflower seeds that was very delicious... should had bought more. We were so full after the food tour that we had to skip the breakfast day after. Thank you Winter for the great time.

We really enjoyed the experience - we met new friends and had fun with Micheal touring the areas for food! There’s a lot of food so come prepared to eat! We had spent some time in Xi’an before doing this tour and found that some food items was better than the ones we had by ourselves. We went to 4 different places and tasted 4+ truly authentic Xi’an dishes that were superb!Michael was knowledgeable and told us funny and meaningful stories to go along with the food. We also rode in a tuk tuk which honestly wouldn’t have happened if we weren’t on the tour so that was a plus! I do, however, want to mention some qualms I had about booking. First of all, I think Chili Cool is a tour company/agency. So it’s not as much of an “Airbnb Experience” type of feel as one would expect if you’ve done experiences before. Micheal was a great guide and very funny so this has absolutely nothing to do with him. It’s more about the fact that this is a food tour led by a tour agency so take that as you may. We did it anyways because we mainly visited Xi’an for the culinary experience and didn’t want to miss out on anything we couldn’t find on our own. While it was memorable, the price is a bit steep especially if you have had food in Xi’an for maybe a couple bucks. I think the price itself should be $10-15 cheaper and the value of this experience will go way up! However, since this is an agency, I don’t think it’s possible. For example, we booked a similar tour in Chengdu with a local (not from a company) for around $35/person. It also made me feel better that this was going through a local who was holding their own food tour instead of an agency since that’s essentially what these Airbnb Experiences are for. Honestly if Micheal just did an Airbnb Experience by himself - we would highly recommend it! On a last note, if there’s anyone who wants some tips on finding Xi’an food, we recommend just walking around the main streets (North, South, East, West) and just go through some of the smaller side streets branching from these main streets (not necessarily even far away). Evening food around the subway station exits (ex. Beidajie) is also a good find. We found some of the best street food there. It may not be sit down places - you kind of have to just sit on the steps of buildings nearby or just stand and eat so that may not be what you’re looking for (bring your own napkins). We also have pretty strong stomachs so we aren’t scared off by street food. It’s a different experience and you don’t necessarily even have to be fluent in Chinese. We were able to do it with some basic words and translation apps. Either way, we hope this review is helpful for anyone thinking of these food tours!
