What you'll do

All my events are currently cancelled until at least April 30 due to Covid-19 coronovirus. Please contact me for any future details.

We'd love to invite you to join us during our regular Tuesday night practice at one of our village's most historic hostelries. We’ll give you an informal concert and explain the histories and meaning and actions in the songs-which all are in the Welsh language. We meet in a room at the Douglas Arms, which was a coaching station for the Irish Mail Coach running between London and Holyhead. Join us here to hear us practice, and we'll give you a very relaxed private informal 'concert'. We're sure you’ll leave with a haunting tune of one of our repertoire of unrequited love songs that we just love to sing!

I'm a member of a Welsh Folk singing group. Y Boncathod. We are a group of 10 women who live in and around the Ogwen Valley, below the mountains of Eryri or Snowdonia in north Wales. We've been singing together for over 15 years. We love singing and delight in sharing our love of our Welsh culture and language, and our wide repertoire of folk songs. We love finding less well-known songs, which Judith, one of our members, beautifully arranges in three part harmonies to suit our voices and our style. We sing unaccompanied, and share our songs at Concerts and festivals and perform to many local community groups over the winter months.

Where you'll be

We invite you to Bethesda's oldest hostelry, the Douglas Arms, built to provide accommodation for guests riding the Mail Coach along the A5 from London to Holyhead, for the ferry to Ireland. This is one of the oldest buildings in our village and, along with the chapels, our grandest. Join us in the front room for an informal 'concert' of your very own. The bar will be open (in another room) where you can buy alcohol, soft or hot drinks.

Simple and wonderful experience hanging out with the singing group for the evening. The group was warm, welcoming, sang beautifully, and took the time to introduce and talk about some of their music. Delightfully informal - felt like spending time with a friend’s singing group over drinks.

This was an absolutely magical and unforgettable evening. We met in a cozy room in a pub, and got to listen in on a private rehearsal of a magnificent group of singers. They explained the history and stories behind Welsh folk songs, and let us ask questions and make requests. They could not have been kinder and friendlier, and the music was gorgeous.

More tips

We meet in a pub so bring money for some drinks. The evening will be very informal, and you’ll find us as we are! You’ll be part of the community and so will hear Welsh being spoken. Welsh is the predominant language in this village, though everyone also speaks English.
