What you'll do

I am happy to collect you from your place of staying at about 8.00 a.m. and then drive for an hour to reach some of the birding sites around Sofia. As there are often birds seen from the car we will stop often to enjoy them. My main approach is to visit sites with highest diversity of birds depending on the season. We would drive to a number of sites and watch from certain spots. We can do leisurely walks often on flat terrain unless you request a visit to mountains. Depending on the season, our birding day will end at about 14.00.

For lunch I would advise you to pack a sandwich or a snack and some water. We will sit somewhere out in nature to eat our lunch while watching birds. If very cold we can always visit a local restaurant.

After lunch we will continue birding and I will drive you to your hotel / apartment after we finish.

Sofia is known as one of the richest in birds European Capitals with over 200 species registered. The city is well positioned and offers easy access to superb sites as wetlands, mountains, forests and a variety of other habitats.

I am keen birder from Bulgaria involved in conservation for the past 20+ years. I am often hired by universities to organize and conduct trainings on bird identification for students, by developers to conduct bird surveys, by tour operators to guide birdwatching and wildlife photography trips. I have extensive experience with bird calls and visual identification of birds and know the sites very well. I am well positioned in the conservation community with multiple contacts around the country that can provide me with up to date information for birds present at locations.

Where you'll be

We will visit a number of sites to ensure high number of birds seen. Marshes we will visit include a walk along a road with a few spots with open water. Forests are usually deciduous but if requested we can also visit a conifer forest. Farmland is quite diverse with strips of wild flowers and often small sections of pseudo steppe. When driving along the roads we often see birds of prey so we will stop often.
