What you'll do

This cultural tour is a 1.5 hour geisha experience at a modern ochaya, or contemporary tea house, where geisha entertain guests with song, dance, games and conversation. Guests may learn about the geisha culture and history while seeing how the locals interact and support geisha. This is a shared tour with included food (if option is selected).

Participants at the 90-minute event will eat some snacks and drink while entertainment is provided by geisha through the form of song, dance, games, conversation, and sometimes even poetry whilst making sure everyone’s glasses are filled. Aside from the highlight, which is the geisha’s performance of a seasonal dance, the geisha performances might also include some of many Japanese fine arts, including playing traditional musical instruments such as the koto (Japanese harp) and shamisen (a three-stringed musical instrument).

I'm the co-founder of Japan Awaits, a travel land operator in Tokyo. In the last few years, I have been trying really hard to revitalize the geisha community here in Tokyo by working closely with many okiya (geisha houses). Many people, including locals, only know of geisha in Kyoto, but there are also geisha in Tokyo. However, many geisha districts (hanamachi) in Tokyo were greatly affected by the air raids during World War II and have had to rebuild since that time.

The licensed geisha in the Omori Chaya, like Nami-san and Umeruri-san, have been practicing as geisha for more than 20 years. They have to constantly practice playing different instruments and perform different seasonal dances to perfect the art of being a geisha. We hope you'll enjoy their performances and learn more about geisha in Tokyo.

Where you'll be

The event will take place in an ochaya. In Japan, an ochaya, while literally meaning “tea house,” is not actually a place to go for drinking tea. An ochaya, traditionally, was a place for customers to be entertained by geisha, with history dating as far back as 1712 when the Tokugawa Shogunate grated licenses to the ochaya of Gion to provide geisha entertainment.
