What you'll do

We start the tour at 71 Wale Street where we discuss the origins of the oldest suburb in South Africa. Our walk then takes us past the Auwal Mosque, which is the oldest mosque in South Africa, dating back to 1794, when it was started by slaves in defiance of Dutch law.

From here, we walk down the street with all the colourful houses. This is the most-photographed street in South Africa. We then work our way towards Cape Town’s famed spice shop, Atlas, where you will smell the heady aromas of spices used in everyday Cape Malay cooking. These are the same spices used by slaves as an expression of freedom in their masters’ kitchens.

The tour then ends with a 30 minute traditional Ghoema music session, which is unique to this culture. The music is rooted in slavery. Slaves were not allowed to speak up against the authorities, but expressed it in the form of singing. We will savour a local snack and cup of tea at a host’s home as well.
Four types of songs are sung. The session is quite interactive as a brief explanation of each song is provided to the guests and who knows, you may be able to sing along as well :-).

Where you'll be

The local traditional music is unique to Cape Town and our culture. The music is similar to the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Some of the songs are upbeat and fun, even though they were songs of resistance. The other songs can be quite moving as well.
The colourful houses are a major attraction, however the history of the community, it's cultures and traditions are what sets it apart from other areas.

Rafiq offered a truly unique experience and insight into the Bo-Kaap community. His pride and dedication to honoring his culture was a special treat that I didn’t expect. Neighbors welcomed us as Rafiq educated me on South African history while we walked through the brightly colored homes embracing this four hundred year old Muslim community. Apartheid was a central theme in history from years past to present. We concluded the experience in the home of a lovely auntie who provided delicious eats while her nephew along with other family members serenaded me with traditional music. This was so special and unique that words can’t do it justice! I am forever grateful to Rafiq and his community for opening their hearts and home. I highly recommend this experience with Rafiq.

Rafiq offered a rich and personal tour of the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, including a visit to a mosque and a musical performance in the home of a local resident. His historical knowledge and personal experience of the local Malay community provided insight into its past and current challenges, including increased tourism and gentrification of the neighborhood. We particularly enjoyed listening to and talking with the local musicians, who sang traditional folk songs and described their connection to the music. They sang beautifully and were very welcoming. The host even shared homemade snacks. Rafiq offers a unique introduction to this neighborhood that would have been impossible to do on our own. We strongly recommend his tour.

PHENOMENAL experience! Rafiq takes you on a unique and authentic journey through the streets of Bo Kaap. Providing rich commentary and insight that only a local from the area can provide. The songs from a bygone era will give you a deeper understanding of the struggles and circumstances that the early inhabitants of the area faced. Thank you Rafiq for a memorable day. This was an experience that added so much context to an area that is an important part of South African history.
