What you'll do

Venture with us into the Colorado desert to unearth the mysteries of the enormous beasts that once roamed these grounds. On this six-day road-trip adventure, we’ll dig into the prehistoric past of this wild and rugged terrain, traversing canyons, mountains, deserts, and dunes as we go.

This trip is offered by Atlas Obscura. Once you've reserved your spot, our team will be in touch to help you prepare for the trip. Please note that flights to and from Denver are not included in the trip cost.

Your itinerary

  • Day 1
    Fossils and Footprints
    Our journey begins with a behind-the-scenes fossil tour and a hike through Dinosaur Ridge.
  • Day 2
    Paleontology at the Quarry
    We'll head out to the Mygatt-Moore Quarry for a fossil dig.
  • Day 3
    Such Great Heights
    We'll drive southeast, exploring the Black Canyon of the Gunnison before making our way to the Crestone Ziggurat.
  • Day 4
    Shifting Sands and Alien Watchtowers
    Today’s adventure begins by climbing the towering dunes in Great Sand Dunes National Park.
  • Day 5
    Robot Dinos
    On our final full day, we’ll venture to the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience to hang out with some animatronic dinosaurs.
  • Day 6
    Farewell Fossil Friends
    After a night in Denver's Dinosaur Hotel, we'll hug our dino friends goodbye, and move boldly into The Anthropocene.

Where you'll be

The trip begins and ends in Denver, but in between we'll be road-tripping across CO's deserts, dunes, and dinosaur dig sites. We'll visit the Black Canyon, Crestone, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and some gorgeous hot springs.

More tips

It can be windy at Sand Dunes National Park. We will provide a bandana to protect your face, but recommend wearing clothing that covers most of your skin.
