What you'll do

* This expedition was listed as one of the world’s top five architecture tours by The Sydney Morning Herald.

Along the Modernist Route, you will see the most important buildings of Barcelona through the perspective of a passionate architect. We will trace for you the sinuous dream path that took Antoni Gaudí from his social concerns to a total absorption with the divine, until he finally became “the last great cathedral builder.”

My aim is to delve into the architectural essence of the Master and dig deep into his visual power, which is what made him an inspiration for the Surrealists and has earned him the honor of being the Best-Known Spanish Architect.

Our discussion will focus on a set of turning points that include a project in early 20th-century Manhattan, the last commission from his patron, Eusebi Güell, and his first architectural steps with the Sagrada Família.

I will explain you about eclecticism and the end of modernism, the Crypt of Colony Güell and the Sagrada Família, utopian socialism, positivist materialism, the intellectual bourgeoisie, the Spanish Civil War, anarchism, beatification and deliquescent surfaces.

Hi I'm Miguel Angel and I founded Barcelona Architecture Walks in 2010 to provide an outlet for my overwhelming desire to tell stories about architecture and delve into its many secrets. All the guides of Barcelona Architecture Walks are practicing architects, most of whom are professors of architecture, as well as architecture critics and we all have a wry smile on our faces because… we love architecture!

Your sherpas for this expedition would be:

Jelena, a PHD architect from Belgrade, researcher, writer and professor at several BCN Universities.
Rafael, practicing architect from Montreal , an architecture critic, writer at AR magazine and professor at the BAC.
Pia, professor of architecture technology and an artist obssessed with drawing and watercolor painting.
Cristina, architect from Barcelona and Helsinki where she guided also.

Where you'll be

You will see amazing examples of the Modernisme period as the Antoni Tàpies Foundation and Casa Lleó Morera by Domènech i Montaner and Casa Amatller by Puig i Cadafalch, some hidden Eixample courtyards and, of course, the 3 main residential buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi: Casa Calvet, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. We don’t go inside the buildings.

Pira was my guide and it just so happened that no one else booked the day that I choose so Pira and I had a very special one-on-one tour. She really tailored her explanations towards the topics that I am interested in (e.g. social-economic structure, politics, and history) and accommodated to my limited knowledge of architecture. I really enjoyed my time with Pira and walking around the city. I highly recommend this tour !!

Christina led a fantastic tour for our little group. Incredibly well informed. Absolutely fluent English and communicating a great depth of knowledge of her subject. She brought her subject, and her city, totally to life! Highly recommended.

We were toured by Pia which was super informative and gave us incredible insight of the city’s history. Highly recommend this tour even if you are not an architect because you fully get to understand the reasoning behind Gaudi’s masterful works of art. 5 out of 5!

This was the first thing we did in Barcelona, and it was a wonderful start! We had more context for every other building we saw in Barcelona. We went to Sagrada Familia later in the day and I felt very prepared to understand what I was experiencing. This is a great value for what is essentially a small seminar with an actual architecture professor!

Spectacular. Our walk with Pia was engaging, educational and inspiring. She infused the experience with history, architectural concepts, humour and anecdotal experience to create a truly unique tour. This experience is perfect for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of Barcelona from an aesthetic and architectural viewpoint - you get so much more of course. If you have an open mind and a good attitude then you will be blown away by the experience.
