What you'll do

This will be a fun workshop designed to help you understand the basic properties of bamboo and how best to work with this versatile material to enable you to create your own designs.

We will start at 10am after fuelling ourselves with fresh coconut water and local snacks with a site and safety introduction. We will share our experience of building with bamboo and give you an overview of the design of our bamboo building which is based on a traditional rice barn along with a quick tour. Then at 11am we will begin our session learning aspects of construction using bamboo. Basic knife tool techniques and cutting/carpentey styles will be demonstrated. Then you will be given the tools to try for yourself...

Our first exercise will be to split bamboo pieces and learn carpentry for joining bamboo in right angles, and for pillar/post support. Then we will contstruct a simple bamboo tray and learn about doweling for bamboo (a hollow material). Lastly we will learn 3 techniques to tie tiers to a support frame which trays can be placed onto. It's a great project you can take home and share with your friends and in each workshop we will go through a design process that involves teamwork and solution-finding in order to fulfil a set of design criteria.

At 1.30pm we will take all our bamboo shaving and offcuts to the kitchen and stoke up our cob rocket-oven... and make pizza!

I am an Australian mother building an inclusive community project for my 17 year old special-needs daughter and local kids with disabilities in Bali. I am passionate about ECOFRIENDLY building, design and community sharing having studied Social science - Environmental Studies at JCU in Cairns, Australia.

I have been learning about building with bamboo for the last 3 years from local master craftsmen and am working to complete the building of this bamboo house as a therapy play-space which will enable my daughter and her friends in Bali to have quality of life and connection with others in a safe community environment, while integrating therapy and play to make fun activities based around recycling and natural building. I am working to connect with local families to enable sharing skills and time & develop a creative support network.

One of the best airbnb experiences I have tried in Bali. It's amazing to learn how the bamboo house was constructed and built on a small piece of land in a dense area of Denpasar city and it makes you wonder how much more fun it would be if all buildings could carry more creativities. For the hands-on session I made a spoon out of wood. If you are someone like me who doesn't DIY much then I'm sure the process of making/creating something from the scrach will bring you unexpected joy like I had experienced. Depending on your working speed, you may get more than one piece done but I'm happy with just making a very special bamboo spoon for my friend. Natalie is a fantastic host and the experience is like doing DIY at a friend's house. She is always there to help you if you are stuck along the way but generally she will let you to enjoy the whole process yourself. Even though spent more than the stipulated hours to finish my design but she didn't rush me at all. Also I met Freyr as well who is a lovely girl with a great taste in music! I enjoyed the experience from the beginning to the end. There are so many things you can learn from Natalie and Freyr so go and visit and have a wonderful time playing with bamboo:)
