About your host

Chad Johnson is an artist, printer, bookbinder, and teacher who has been living in the Bay Area for nearly two decades. After years of professional printing and bookbinding work, he now shares his skills and knowledge as the Studio Director at the San Francisco Center for the Book. He has designed this experience to introduce the rich history of printing and binding in a fun and engaging manner.

About San Francisco Center for the Book

The San Francisco Center for the Book is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that fosters the joy of books and bookmaking, the history, artistry, and continuing presence of books in our culture and enduring importance as a medium of self-expression. We provide both a home for Bay Area book artists and a place where the wider community can discover book arts.
This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to San Francisco Center for the Book. .

What we’ll do

Ever wonder how a book is made? In this experience, one of our excellent SFCB instructors will introduce you to the main elements of printing and binding, allowing participants to print a folding cover and then use it as the binding for a traditional pamphlet stitch book. Ink, paper, thread: we take it back to basics.

What else you should know

One of our excellent SFCB instructors will guide you through this experience. Participants will be working hands-on with presses that use ink and oil, so please choose your attire accordingly.
