What you'll do

On this 1½ hour guided beach horse ride you will pass by wild countryside to a white, crescent shaped beach on the Connemara coast, along the wonderfully scenic Wild Atlantic Way. Afterwards enjoy either tea/coffee and a homemade Irish scone with clotted cream and jam or a delicious Irish coffee at the local village pub. After an initial short riding assessment in the arena by myself and my co-host, head out from the riding centre on horseback and ride through the fishing village toward Selerna Beach, a scenic, crescent-shaped stretch of sand that looks toward Inishbofin Island to the west and the mouth of Cleggan Bay to the east. My knowledgeable, friendly and helpful co-host accompanies every trek and makes each ride a unique, really enjoyable and special experience on these magnificent animals with Connemara's spectacular scenery all around you. Walk, trot, or gallop across this quiet Wild Atlantic Way shoreline, admiring the megalithic triple wedge tomb up on the field to the right of the beach. Take in the ocean views and islands beyond before turning back along the back roads, with their many horses, cows, and sheep in the fields and the mighty Twelve Bens mountain range as its backdrop. This trek is suitable for beginner to advanced riders. Available every day, all year around. Check times as rides are tide time dependent and change every day.

I started my riding centre over 30 years ago because I am passionate about all things horsey and love to share my passion of horse riding with people in this-the most breath taking of land and seascapes-Connemara! I have specialized over the years coaching show jumping and dressage, winning numerous All Ireland national and European International championship awards over the years with my students. Alannah my grand daughter and co-host, is the main guide on our beach horse riding treks. She is a native of Connemara and a proud award winner of the All Ireland national and European International championships and an ongoing and serious competitor in this sport. She loves sharing her love of horses with our customers and guiding them to the white sandy beaches of Connemara.

The proprietor was quite nice, but we rode out with a new employee, a French girl who didn’t speak much English and seemed to be more interested in looking at her phone. We walked the horses for 30 minutes to a short stretch of beach that didn’t match the description even remotely. After a ridiculous 5 minute trot back and forth on the beach we returned to the stable, walking and occasionally trotting down a paved road. The scones and Irish coffee mentioned in the description were not mentioned, in fact, nobody even said goodbye.
