What you'll do

This is an unique chance to learn about Sami culture and experience the true northern hospitality in Bergen. This is something you will not be able to find in a museum. We will first have a short presentation about the Sami people for some background information. You will learn about the Sami people, the way of living and we will have a look at my private collection of Sami handicrafts and art. Maybe you would like to buy a bracelet? You will learn about the Sami traditional singing, joik, which is a kind of chanting, like heard in the Norwegian song "Spirit in the sky" in the Eurovision song contest 2019. Did you know that all Sami children are given their own joik at birth? Would you like to learn to joik? This evening is for you: you decide. You will also want to learn about the Sami costume; Kofte. Did you know that you can tell where a Sami originates simply by looking at the colours on the kofte? How would you look in a kofte? Would you like to try on a traditional Sami kofte (for women) for a nice photo shoot? Bring your camera! We will end the evening with a 3 course traditional Sami dinner: starting with salmon, followed by the traditional Sami bidos with reindeer, which is always served in Sami weddings, and the dessert will be based on local berries. Over dinner we will talk about anything you want to know about the Sami culture and people

I am Elin and I am sami - the only indigenous people living in Norway. For centuries the Norwegian government has suppressed the Sami people, making it shameful to be Sami. Luckily, this is changing. Sami culture is now on the rise again and our king has apologized publicly for the way the Sami people has been treated.

I am proud to be Sami and happy to share my culture with you. I grew up in a sea Sami family and even though I work as an engineer, the sami culture is still part of me. I have a passion for cooking and I have attended cooking classes with Laila Spik, a Sami Chef who has inspired modern cooking gourmet restaurants like Noma.

If the dates of this event does not suit you, please send a message and I will try to arrange something for you if possible.

What a lovely evening! Elin and Dag could not have been more welcoming. Elin's personal stories were very meaningful and we had a robust conversation about international economics as a bonus! The food was delicious and the evening very special. I also recommend you consider staying with them if you have an early flight. You can walk to the airport.

We felt special and at home the moment we entered Elin’s home, not least because of the doggy’s warm welcome. We learned a lot about a culture unknown to us, but also enjoyed and incredible dinner and the wonderful wine pairing by her husband. An absolute must!

I had such a lovely and interesting time at Elin´s place! The food was delicious and restaurant quality, I learned many new things about the Sami culture, including the beautiful art of joiking, could see Sami jewelery & crafts and also try on a full, traditional Sami Kofte. :-) Elin and her husband are very warm, friendly and welcoming and I had such a beautiful evening at their home. Thanks a lot, for great experience! :-)

Elin was so accommodating as we asked her to host at the last minute. She was kind and knowledgeable. She was so well prepared and put much thought into our experience. My daughter said that it was her favorite experience in Norway.

Elin is a wonderful host and she’d provide you with sufficient information about their culture (ex: music and cuisine) and history of Sami. If you’re seeking for a mind-provoking experience, I’d definitely recommend her programme!

It was a great experience! The host, Elin was very kind and wonderful and the event was exceptional. The event was well prepared and organised. In advance, she asked me what aspect of the Sami culture I’m interested in. And at the day of the event, she had done beautiful decorations of the precious costumes and crafts, and quick presentation slides of Sami culture as well, while sharing her own stories. The dinner was great as restaurant quality! I could tell that not only she likes cooking but also hosting and welcoming guests. Her Sami friend also joined us for the evening with her costume. So we had a nice dinner all together. I could feel the people of Sami in person. This definitely cannot be experienced at museums. I felt genuinely very welcomed and it was such a nice evening:)
