What you'll do

We will depart from Salisbury and ride about 30 minutes to the beach. (You can ride with me or follow me in your own vehicle.) I will share with you the history of the area as only a local can. When we arrive at the beach, we will spend up to 2 hours walking and exploring while we search for sea glass and other treasures. I will give you tips on what to look for, the best times to look, and what to do with your finds after you get home.

I am an Eastern Shore native who has called this part of Maryland home for most of my 50+ years. Always at the beach, but not much of a swimmer, I started beachcombing as a way to enjoy the natural beauty of my area. One particular beach that only the locals know about is a treasure trove for beachcombers! On any given day you can find loads of sea glass in a beautiful array of colors, along with occasional pieces of sea pottery and the loveliest oyster shells you will ever see! Join me for a walk on this small beach and you'll be guaranteed to find some treasures to take home!

Where you'll be

The secluded beach we will visit is in a small rural community (population: 500) about a half hour away from Salisbury MD. Due to tide patterns and water currents, there is an abundance of sea glass that washes up on its shore. The beach is often empty and even in the height of summer, it rarely has more than 20-25 people on it. It's not unusual to arrive and have the entire beach to yourself!

What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon! Julie met us at a convenient location. Due to Covid, we chose to follow her in our car. On the way, Julie called and shared interesting tidbits about the history of the region. It really brought the area to life for us. When we arrived at the secluded beach, we basically had the place to ourselves. The weather was perfect; sunny and 70s, in October! Julie gave us tips on how to find the beautiful pieces of glass hidden amongst the sand and oyster shells. She described the types of glass we might discover. She is a real pro at uncovering the sea glass. She offered to let us wander off on our own or to search with us. We were glad we had her join us. She helped us hunt, offered up to us the glass she found, and was great company. Wading through the water while searching for sea glass was so relaxing. We are glad we did this excursion.

Julie contacted us via email the day before our experience providing a meet-up location that was easy to find and to which, on the day of, she met us on time. If you're in to sea glass and finding out-of-the-way locations to search for it, this is what she provided. I actually didn't know what sea glass was; only that looking for it sounded like fun, and to me, it was. FYI, if you don't know either, it's broken glass that has had the edges ground smooth by sand. So you'll be combing the beach for broken glass. If you want to stick with Julie and look together, she'll give you her full attention. If you want to get the basics and hunt on your own, she'll be happy to let you do that too. I liked the fact that she actually came directly to me and asked if I was the kind of person who would rather be left alone to look (I am) after noticing that I had lagged behind our small group. Slow paced, meticulous people . . . this is for you. And remember, Julie can't guarantee that you'll find sea glass. But she'll take you to what is normally a good finding location. Whether or not you have a good time will be entirely up to you. Our day out was dreary and it eventually even rained, but we still enjoyed. (It made the hot coffee taste all the better when we were done!)

Wonderful experience, even in the late fall. Small but mostly empty beach with nice selection of sea glass, shells and fun extras (bone, coal, pottery). Julie loves collecting sea glass and shared her passion. She was knowledgeable and shared local tips. Would definitely do it again!

Had a lovely afternoon traveling to our host’s special spot for beach glass collecting. Julie met us on time, was very friendly & shared stories of her life and collecting. We were left on our own to go at our own pace and enjoy collecting. If you like to explore new places and have a nice, low key experience, this is for you.
