What you'll do

We will start the day with a brief introduction to the materials we will be using, including choice of suitable textiles.
After selecting a plaster head of your choice, you will learn how to build a simple armature using everyday materials. If you wish, you can add wings to your figure to create either a fairy or angel (optional).
We will then use recycled textiles to 'dry wrap' our sculpture before painting with Powertex.
Now comes the fashion design! Delve into the 'rummage box' to find interesting fabrics to dress your figure. Dip the textiles into the Powertex & drape whilst wet.
Your figure can then be left to air dry while we enjoy our packed lunch. Weather permitting, we can eat on the terrace, taking advantage of the view across the woods of Lamorna Valley from our slightly elevated position. Alternatively, there is a glass walled dining area if the weather is not conducive to outdoor dining.
Finally, add colour to your sculpture using a range of matt, metallic & pearlised pigments & a dry brush technique to bring out all the beautiful textures of the fabrics.
Take your sculpture home at the end of the workshop. Weather resistant after 3 weeks air drying at room temperature.

I have been creating art using recycled textiles & Powertex fabric hardener for the last 8 years, being an early adopter of the product when it first came over to the UK from Belgium. Having started by interest making items for craft fairs, I was asked to become a Certified Powertex Tutor (one for the first in the UK) & have been running workshops using this versatile medium for the last 6 years. Having gained all 4 levels of Tutor Training I have now been selected as one of only 6 Powertex Tutor Training Academies in the UK & am now working towards my Powertex Masters Certificate (the highest certification in this field). I regularly teach textile sculpture & mixed media workshops from my home studio in Northants as well as guest tutoring for the WI Denman College & several other venues, plus my new studio in West Cornwall.

More tips

This is a fun, but messy (arty) workshop. We will use recycle textiles & a water based, non-toxic, environmentally friendly fabric hardener which may accidentally splash on clothing. This is why we ask that participants wear old clothes.
The workshop is perfectly suitable for complete beginners.

What to bring

Please note that we will be using a non-toxic, environmentally friendly fabric hardener which can be messy. Therefore, we request that students:
