What you'll do

I will arrive at the meeting point, a well know city centre landmark, on my vintage styled tricycle in which I transport all of my artist materials including some finished examples of my own work for you to see. If the weather is suitable: we will gather at public seating in front of one of three specific points that I have identified for their historical and artistic interest. I will share my own drawing style, help with ideas of how to be comfortable drawing in public, explain a little of the history of the buildings we will draw and point out how the composition of a drawing might be easily set out. I will give out drawing paper on a clip board and a pen. I will encourage the group to make simple loose drawing lines to get used to moving the pen to draw freely. I will make observations to encourage confidence in the drawings made. I will let each member choose a prepared collage card which is in a pack with an envelope and more collage scraps in a cello bag. We will then draw the chosen building using the drawing style already practiced. I expect this will take an hour or so after which we will retire to a local cafe to apply the final touches which help give a finished look to your drawings. I will round up the experience by offering a second pack that you might continue to draw independently a building of your own choice and set you off on your own drawing career!
Other things to note
If it’s raining we will meet inside the gallery where we can also view some amazing buildings to draw. We will also go for a cuppa in a local coffee shop where you can start to learn to be at ease with drawing in a public place.

I’m a successful artist with a unique approach to drawing cityscapes using a combination of collage and ink drawing. I have developed an easily portable drawing set up and can help others adopt this approach and feel more confident drawing in public places. Once you learn about it you might find you want to take your drawing pack with you wherever you go! I like to share the joy of drawing with others and hope to pass on how even a beginner artist can develop a comfortable style of their own and discover how sociable it can be to be an artist! People love to see what artists are drawing and they tend to be very complimentary I find. I hope people enjoying my experience will be a little less terrified of drawing!

Where you'll be

We will meet outside the McManus Gallery which is surrounded by other buildings of interest both architecturally and historically. We won’t have to walk far to get lots of drawing inspiration from this central location. It is the different structure of the buildings as drawing compositions that we will be focusing on. We will observe the trees and planting surrounding the buildings such that we can use these shapes in our drawings too
