What you'll do

We will explain the origin of this trade and the great tradition that it has in Mijas. We will show you how different pieces are made and then we will take action by making a small table basket. Everything is done 100% by hand using specific needles for spartery (grass) and hemp thread. The last step will be to decorate it.

I am Sonia, co-founder of the Puerta-Ágora School-Craft Workshop. In this cooperative of artisans he is also as Professor José, with more than 30 years of experience in the world of ceramics and painting in tile murals.
Craftsmanship is my passion and I have the great luck of being able to practice two trades. I belong to the third generation of women dressmakers / tailor of Euskadi and crafts run through my veins. Teaching, as an archeologist I am, is my second weakness and in this school-workshop I can unify both worlds. I was also fortunate to have one of the last remaining teachers in the craft department, being able to learn the most from him. The first objective of this knowledge is to be able to transmit and disseminate it as much as possible so that it is not lost.

Where you'll be

The workshop will be held in our craft school, it is an open space that allows us to see how the other colleagues work in their respective trades. We are part of a very special and artistic coworking. After finishing the course, a glass of wine from the area will be offered and we will give you an invitation per person to visit the House Museum of History and Ethnology of Mijas, which is 5 minutes walk from our school-workshop.
