Hi !
I'm Maki Ochi, Japanese calligrapher and instructor.
I started learning Japanese calligraphy at the age of 4.
I obtained the title of master calligrapher at Nihon shuji in 2010.
Now, I usually teach calligraphy to people of all ages, from elementary school children to elderly people at elderly home.

I met a university student from Canada last year.
He asked me to teach Japanese calligraphy.
I really enjoyed teaching Japanese calligraphy to foreigner !!

Actually, I have been to Australia for a year as an exchange student when I was a high school student.
I had the opportunity to explain calligraphy and Japan during stay in Australia, but I couldn't say it well.
I hope to be able to explain Japan and calligraphy to foreigners THIS TIME !!
Enjoy Japanese calligraphy and culture!

Where you'll be

It's only 12 minutes by train from Shibuya !
The Olympic equestrian arena is very close to my house.

The lesson is held at the instructor's house.
so you can see where and how Japanese people live.
If you are curious about the Japanese lifestyle, this is a great chance !

There is a shrine near my house,
if you have time, I will take you to the shrine and show you how to visit..it's a very comfortable place to live.

I highly recommend this class! I came with an old friend and we sat in 真紀さん’s home. She was really kind and took the time to teach you how to move the brush. I’ve done another calligraphy class recently but we just watched them and then did a kanji on our own (which is really hard). 真紀さん will teach you a bit about how kanji has evolved over time to the characters they use today. My favorite part is that you can choose to learn whatever kanji you wanted! I chose to write 猫 which is cat. I plan to return to do this again sometime. Also, it’s really close to the station (which is only 5 stops away from Shibuya) so it is easily accessible and convenient to put into your travel schedule! The most unique part was being able to do this at a Japanese person’s home. Nothing feels more personal and immersive than trying a traditional art in a home. Bonus: I got to practice my Japanese with her!
