What you'll do

We will go trekking on arguably the best day hike in the Tokyo area. Our hike on the mountain of Oyama features a rare mountain market town, Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, a stunning view of Mount Fuji on one side and a panorama of greater Tokyo on the other. This is still a secret from tourists so it is a chance to escape the crowds.

The days order in brief: 1. Meet up 2. Climb checking out the sights along the way. 3. Lunch on the summit 4. Come down for optional hot springs.

1. Meet at Isehara Station at 8:30am. It is a direct 1 hour, 600 yen train from Shinjuku Station on the Odakyu Line.

2. Climb the mountain: Oyama is 1,252m tall. The climb is not technically difficult but it is steep and requires a certain amount of stamina. There is the option of a cable which takes us to 700m to start the hike or we can skip it if the group feels strong enough. With the cable car it is a 3 hour 5km hike. Without the cable car it is a 4 hour 9km hike or so.

3. Lunch: A bento lunch box is included and we will eat on the summit with hot tea and snacks also included. If you have dietary requirements please let me know.

4. After coming down there will be the option of being dropped at a local hot spring onsen to unwind. If you have tattoos please let me know.

I'm a professional mountain and nature guide in Japan. I am lucky enough to have guided on Mount Fuji, Yakushima, Hakone and lots of amazing places. But this time I want to take you on my absolute favorite day hike.

I love to go trail running! I am the founder of an outer island eco tourism project called islands-of-japan, helping to boost tourism on the poorest and most far flung islands of Japan.

I have lived in Japan for 8 years. I am a beer lover, and an apprentice craft beer maker.

Our family agrees that our hike with Michael was the highlight of our vacation! Mike took the time to get to know each member (5) of our family and was very in tune to the needs of each of us during the day. He went above and beyond the role of a guide in that he helped us to navigate the public transportation system and provided suggestions (based on our interests) for the remainder of our stay in Japan. The hike itself was beautiful and we enjoyed the warm welcome from local hikers.

Michael was a fantastic tour guide in our hike up the Oyama mountain. The hike was quite challenging but Michael was quick to adapt the difficulty to match our fitness levels. We really enjoyed taking the road 'less traveled', through a quaint, traditional Japanese market. It felt far from a tourist trap – we only saw locals participating in activities on the mountainside. We learned plenty about Japanese culture – Buddhist + Shinto religion, and what it's like raising a family in the greater Tokyo area. This is something we could've never planned or done alone, so we thank Michael for giving us a memorable experience on our honeymoon! Would recommend this for anyone looking to do something unique and memorable, while taking a quick break from the busy Tokyo scene.

My partner and I had a wonderful experience with Mike, who made our trip feel very personalised. He had a brilliant knowledge of the local culture, and was a very experienced hiker. We enjoyed seeing the plum blossoms and the onsen as well! We highly recommend taking a tour with Mike and will be back to do another one with him next time!

Michael was very accommodating and adapted well to our needs and the weather. We normally like to do a big hike, but the day turned out to be quite wet, so he found an alternative hike last minute that would still leave us satisfied without being totally cold and soaking wet. Then he was able to get us a private room at a local onsen after the hike- the private room being necessary due to my tattoos. I don't think we could've done that on our own since that specific onsen didn't speak english. Michael is able to give a dual view of the japanese culture since he has lived there for many years but is not originally from there. He is also fluent in Japanese which was very helpful. He told some fun mythical stories during our hike to give us an understanding of shintoism and buddhism and we had great conversation. Overall a wonderful day- highly recommend.

We spent an amazing day on the Oyama mountain with Michael. He's a truly great person, and we're glad to have meet him! He's full of stories about Japan History and mythology, which gives this experience a great touch. He's really passionnate about Japan. Michael was really considerate and attentive to our needs. The walk itself was totally amazing, tones of stairs, two amazing temples, and an awesome view. Highly recommend this hike.

I would not have wanted to do this experience on my own! The onsen was so relaxing and definitely a once in a lifetime experience! Thanks again, Mike!
