The Soul Food Tour gave us a unique view of the Shaw District and its place in American History. My suggestion would be to take the historical tour, before having the meal. You will definitely work up an appetite. Johnny and Milt work well together and complement each other’s skills. The tour offers a great learning opportunity.

We learned far more and felt more kinship with the history and culture of the area through Johnny's eyes. He introduced us to people as we walked which felt special and inclusive. He went out of his way, to listen deeply to our questions and to anwer in like manner. He is extremely personable and dedicated. the food that we ate was delicious and had its own history. We thought this tour was great way for u to begin our visit to Washington, DC. I encourage all visitors to include this in their visit.

Please attend this tour. The history behind this community is rich and is a little nice intro to get a better understanding of the different types of cultures in the DC area. If you want to eat, please come hungry.

Starting with the positive - Johnny's personality is very welcoming and open. The conversations that he facilitated over the tastings were engaging and thought-provoking. The food at the locations we visited was very good and I even got to try vegan barbecue. One note, I would not recommend this tour for anyone familiar with African-American history, as the information presented is pretty basic. Our tour took longer than indicated, as wait times at 2 of the 3 restaurants were lengthy. This is a solid tour for international visitors or those wanting to experience soul food for the first time.

This was a great tour! Johnny provided great context and food recommendations for the tour. Although we probably could’ve gone to the restaurants on our own, we wouldn’t have understood the historical and cultural significance of the restaurants and the greater Shaw community. You can order as much or as little as you want, but definitely come hungry. You’ll want to eat everything! Johnny was also very flexible with us in terms of time. We were a larger group that hadn’t seen each other in a while, so we spend considerable time catching up with each other. Johnny didn’t make us feel rushed at all, and even provided us with the opportunity to chat with a prominent Shaw community member. Would highly recommend this tour!
