What you'll do

Starting at the main gate of the University of Glasgow, we will explore the 6 forms of architecture in the University vicinity with particular focus on the majestic Neo-Gothic Main Building, the elegant Art Deco Reading Room and the Brutalist Art Gallery.

After a 20 min wander around these buildings we will progress to the re-assembled, 4 storey home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh where I will give a full 45 min tour. This is your opportunity to experience the genius of one of Glasgow's best loved designers and really appreciate one of the most progressive and prophetic collections in world design. During this tour, I'll give comprehensive insight into the motivations, designs and history of Charles and his wife Margaret's work, as well as providing historical context for their groundbreaking 'Glasgow Style'.
Upon completion of the Mackintosh tour we will meander like students of old, through Professor's square and to the University's south gate, where we will examine the Charles Rennie Mackintosh collection at the grandiose Kelvingrove Art Gallery. After chatting about the glorious red sandstone building itself - as well as the urban legends surrounding, we will progress and pay special attention to Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh's sublime 'Gesso' art work where I will go into detail about her technique and how you can create your very own Glasgow style Gesso work at home!

Andrew’s tour exceeded my expectations. Andrew has a great knowledge of Charles Rennie Macintosh and was able to convey his knowledge in an interesting way. He gave us to a very interesting experience in that he took us to Charles and Margaret Macintosh’s relocated house. If you have an interest in the Macintosh’s and Glasgow style of early 1900s then this is a great tour

Andrew is a superb guide who capitalised on his background of having studied and now works for the University of Glasgow, as well as his in-depth interest and passion for Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He is friendly, lively and a marvellous commentator. He covered so much ground over the course of 1.5 hours that I felt I know Glasgow and some of its impressive history and personalities far more. I still reflect on what Andrew showed us and gently educated us about regarding architecture, history and the contribution of Rennie Mackintosh.
