What you'll do

How Dutch would you like it to be? Amsterdam, mills, cheese, flowers and polders, if you like the Dutch classics, this tour is the place to be.

We meet at Amsterdam Central Station and take public transport to Aalsmeer, where we visit the largest marketplace for flowers and plants in the world. The flower auction is a world in itself. You have to get up early for it, but that is more than worth a visit to the auction. Experience the hustle and bustle on the floor, see the traders buying at the clock and marvel at the enormous amount of beautiful flowers from almost 50 countries that are traded here every day.

Centuries ago, foreign visitors were deeply impressed by the hundreds of windmills they saw in the Zaan region. All those rotating blades!
Today, to experience what it's like to walk around in a real mill, to hear the wood crackle and the sails fly, to see how the miller's family had to survive centuries ago in a small house, you go and see it all on the Zaanse Schans.

You return back to Amsterdam for a stroll and to complete the day with a beautiful boat tour through the canals of Amsterdam.

Hi my name is Hans and ever since I was a small boy, growing up in the east of the Netherlands, I have been fascinated by my country's history, landscape and culture.

In 1996 I completed a PhD in European history at the University of Amsterdam and since then I have been leading tours through Amsterdam and the Netherlands. It has been a constant pleasure for me to show off the most beautiful spots of the Netherlands to new arrivals and reveal just some of its charms, secrets and unbelievable stories.

My academic background has given me extensive knowledge of Europe's history and culture but my guiding experience has also included flower themed tours as well as waterland tours which explore the countryside of the Netherlands.

Where you'll be

When you think of the Netherlands, you think of flowers, mills, cows and cheese. You will experience this in a small group. We meet at Amsterdam Station and head to Aalsmeer, where you visit the largest flower auction in the world. Our next stop will be the Cruquius pumping station that ensures dry feet and that cows can graze. On the Zaanse schans you will experience how people lived in the 19th century and experience the power of the wind.

Took a nice bike trip with Hans down to the flower region in late August. Hans gave us some nice insight into the region and did his best to find areas where there were actually flowers blooming. Only gave it a 4 star because this time of year is very limited with blooming flowers. That said what we did see, a private grower of Cannas (gorgeous) and the Dahlias were just awesome. Just be warned that this time of year 90% of the fields are not blooming so if you are expecting endless views of flowers as you ride, this isn't the time of year to go. But regardless it's still a super relaxed afternoon riding around a lovely countryside.

Haan was very knowledgeable and interactive. He arranged the day just for the two of us and at the beginning I misunderstood the map. He quickly responded to meet another place and made our day great
